What Terrarium is
Terrarium is a managed self-hosting platform. You pick apps from our catalog, and we run them for you on dedicated, isolated servers. Your data stays yours — we just handle the infrastructure.
We don't create, own, or control the open-source apps in our catalog (Navidrome, Memos, Mealie, etc.). We provide the hosting infrastructure, keep it updated, and make it easy to use.
Terrarium is currently in alpha. Things may change, break, or be rearranged as we figure things out. We'll always give you notice before making changes that affect your data.
Your account
One account per person or household. You're responsible for keeping your password secure. Some apps (like Navidrome or Mealie) have their own internal user accounts — those are separate from your Terrarium account.
By creating an account, you agree to these terms and our Privacy Policy.
What we store
- Account info: your email address, username, display name, and a hashed version of your password (we never store your actual password)
- App data: whatever you put in your apps — music, notes, recipes, bookmarks, etc. Each app runs on its own isolated server with its own storage.
- Shared media: files like music and audiobooks are stored in private cloud storage buckets with encrypted credentials — only your apps can access them
What we don't do with your data
- We don't sell it
- We don't share it with third parties
- We don't use it for advertising
- We don't profile you or send your data to third-party analytics services
- We only access your data to operate the service (provisioning, backups, troubleshooting)

Acceptable use
Terrarium is for personal and household use. You agree not to:
- Store or distribute illegal content
- Use your apps for cryptocurrency mining or other resource-intensive tasks unrelated to the app's purpose
- Attempt to access other users' data or infrastructure
- Resell or sublicense access to your Terrarium apps
- Circumvent resource limits or abuse free tiers
We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these rules.
Third-party apps and security
The apps in our catalog are open-source software developed by their respective communities, not by Terrarium. While we don't control the apps themselves, here's what we do to keep your environment safe:
- We vet apps before adding them to the catalog
- We keep app images updated and apply security patches
- Each app runs in its own isolated environment — one app can't access another's data
- We configure secure defaults (authentication enabled, public registration disabled where applicable)
- We monitor for known vulnerabilities in the apps we host
That said, we can't guarantee that third-party apps are free of bugs or security vulnerabilities. If we become aware of a security issue in a hosted app, we'll update it as quickly as possible and notify affected users if their data may have been impacted.
Copyright and DMCA
You're responsible for the content you upload to your apps. Don't upload content you don't have the right to use.
If you believe content hosted on Terrarium infringes your copyright, you can submit a DMCA takedown notice todmca@getterrarium.app with:
- Identification of the copyrighted work
- Identification of the infringing material and where it's located
- Your contact information
- A statement that you have a good-faith belief that the use is not authorized
- A statement, under penalty of perjury, that the information in your notice is accurate and that you are the copyright owner or authorized to act on their behalf
- Your physical or electronic signature
We will respond to valid DMCA notices and may remove or disable access to allegedly infringing content. Accounts with repeated copyright violations may be terminated.
Backups and data loss
We take reasonable measures to protect your data, including server-level backups. However, no hosting platform can guarantee against all data loss. We strongly recommend keeping your own copies of anything irreplaceable. You can export your data anytime through the file manager on your app's card, or each app's built-in export features.
Availability
This is an alpha service. We don't guarantee uptime. Your apps sleep when idle and wake up when you visit them, so there's a brief startup delay (a few seconds). We do our best to keep things running smoothly, but outages can happen.
If we ever shut down
We'll give you at least 90 days written notice (via email) before any planned shutdown. During that period, you'll have full access to export your data.
Cancellation and data retention
- Uninstalling an app archives it for 30 days. During that time, you can restore it with all your data intact.
- After 30 days, archived data is permanently deleted.
- Deleting your account follows the same 30-day retention window, then everything is removed.
Warranty disclaimer
TERRARIUM IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, SECURE, OR ERROR-FREE.
Limitation of liability
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, TERRARIUM SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF DATA, PROFITS, OR REVENUE, WHETHER DIRECT OR INDIRECT, ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM ARISING FROM THESE TERMS OR YOUR USE OF TERRARIUM SHALL NOT EXCEED THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US IN THE TWELVE (12) MONTHS PRECEDING THE CLAIM.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Washington, USA. Any disputes will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Washington State.
Changes to these terms
If we make material changes, we'll email you before they take effect. Continued use after that means you accept the new terms.
