What is Terrarium?

A quick overview of what Terrarium is, how it works, and why it exists.

Terrarium gives you your own private versions of the apps you use every day — music streaming, notes, recipes, audiobooks, and more. Instead of using big tech services that mine your data and show you ads, you get apps that are just yours.

Everything runs in the cloud, so there's nothing to install or manage. You sign up, pick the apps you want, and start using them.

How does it work?

When you install an app, Terrarium spins up a dedicated instance just for you. Each app gets its own isolated server and storage. Your data never touches anyone else's.

Apps sleep when you're not using them and wake up automatically when you visit them — usually in a few seconds. You'll see a little creature animation on your dashboard while it wakes up.

What apps are available?

  • Navidrome — Your own music server. Upload your music library and stream it from any device or phone app.
  • Audiobookshelf — Audiobook and podcast player. Upload your audiobooks and pick up where you left off on any device.
  • Mealie — Recipe manager. Save recipes from the web (without the life stories), plan meals, and generate shopping lists.
  • Memos — Quick-capture notes. Markdown, tags, and full-text search.
  • Actual Budget — Privacy-focused budgeting. Import transactions, set goals, track spending.
  • My List — Shared shopping lists that sync across devices and work offline.

How is this different from Spotify, Google Keep, etc.?

Those services are free because you are the product. They collect your data, show you ads, and can change the deal whenever they want.

With Terrarium, you pay a fair price and get apps that work for you. Your data stays yours. No ads, no tracking, no lock-in. If you ever want to leave, you can export everything and take it with you.

Do I need to be technical?

Not at all. If you can sign up for an email account, you can use Terrarium.
